How it Works

We have grown so accustomed to digital screens and are now living in a world where we are almost 24/7 reliant on technology.

"Digital eye strain" is now a real condition and as our screen time increases - at home, in the office, and at schools and universities - so do the symptoms like burning eyes, blurred vision, headaches and disrupted sleep. Not only do our screens give us these short-term disturbances, but now our 'overexposure', can also be found to contributing to long-term, permanent retina damage.

It's not hard to see why a large percentage of us are now experiencing digital eye strain. For many of us, the glow of a phone's screen is the first thing we see when we wake and the last thing we see before sleep. In between that, we fill the hours saturated in LED light, staring at documents and emails, then Facebook updates and Netflix in the evenings to 'wind down'. Unfortunately, that leaves very little room for our eyes to get the chance to 'wind down'.

The Science Part:

Blue Light is the specific section of the visible light spectrum that can have harmful effects on our eyes and sleep

In living our daily modern lives, we are exposed to much more blue spectrum light than we would naturally be. Artificial lighting, phones, computers, office lighting and LED lights all emit a high level of blue spectrum light.

This harmful blue light its the spectrum of light that Nikki Dawn glasses assist to block out as you wear them throughout the day and evening.
This blue light can interfere with your natural sleep patterns. If you are finding that its hard for you to get to sleep, then Nikki Dawn glasses could help.

Blue light regulates the production of a hormone in your brain called "melatonin". Naturally over the course of the day, as your eyes are exposed to light/blue light, melatonin production is suppressed, and as it gets darker throughout the day your melatonin production increases, telling your mind and body you're getting ready to sleep. If you are exposed to more blue light than you should be throughout the day, and particularly in the afternoon through to evening, it suppresses the production of Melatonin and therefore can make it harder for you to fall asleep.

Many of us are on screens and using artificial lighting into late hours in the night, often right before we want to sleep. Wearing Nikki Dawn glasses blocks the harmful parts of this blue light and therefore allowing Melatonin to produce at a more natural pace, helping you to get a better sleep and regulate your sleep patterns.
Without getting into complicated physics, there is an inverse relationship between the wavelength of light rays and the amount of energy they contain. Basically, light rays that have relatively long wavelengths contain less energy, and those with short wavelengths have more energy.

Symptoms of Digital Eye-strain:

Being overexposed to blue light from our computers, phones, TV's can be a cause of a range of symptoms such as:

  • Eye Strain
  • Dry Eyes
  • Headaches
  • Blurry Vision
  • Bad Sleeps
  • Disturbances to sleep patterns
  • Long-term retina damage
  • AMD (age-related macular degeneration)

Nikki Dawn glasses are specially designed to block out the harmful light which could help you with some or all of these symptoms.

Extra tips for office workers:

Office workers get the short end of the stick when it comes to eye strain. If you work in an office, you'll be no stranger to all the symptoms that come along with staring at your screen for 6-8 hours of the day... Thus, along with wearing your Nikki Dawn glasses, we suggest implementing a simple lifestyle adjustment to give your eyes an extra bit of TLC with the 20-20-20 rule: take a 20-second break every 20 minutes to look at something 20 feet away. Also, try to actively blink more often - starting at screens often reduces how often people blink, making their eyes drier, so as silly as it sounds, it could be a big help!
